President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the nomination of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda for the position of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The appointment, which is in accordance with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, is now subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
The announcement, contained in a State House press release signed by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, fills the vacancy created by the recent reassignment of the erstwhile Deputy Governor, Mr. Bala Bello.
Bello was recently appointed as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.
Lamido Yuguda is a familiar figure in Nigeria’s financial services sector, having recently served as the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a position he held from 2020 to 2024.
His career, however, is deeply rooted in the Central Bank, where he began as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department in 1984.
Yuguda’s professional journey includes a stint as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1997 to 2001.
He returned to the CBN thereafter and rose through the ranks to become Director of the Reserve Management Department, a position he held for six years before his retirement from the bank in 2016.
He holds a B.Sc. in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University (1983) and a master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom (1991). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a CFA charterholder.
In a statement, President Tinubu charged Yuguda to bring his extensive experience to bear in his new role, urging him to discharge his responsibilities with renewed dedication, professionalism, and a firm commitment to ensuring Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.
