President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police.
The appointment follows the resignation of IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down from the position citing pressing family considerations.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu accepted Mr. Egbetokun’s resignation letter earlier today.
The President described the outgoing IGP as a dedicated public servant, acknowledging his commitment to the nation’s security over many years.
“President Tinubu received Mr. Egbetokun’s resignation earlier today and expressed his profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
“The President acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure”, the statement read.
Mr. Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023 and was serving a four-year term initially scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. He cited pressing family considerations for his decision to step down mid-term.
In a swift move to ensure stability in the police command, President Tinubu approved the immediate appointment of AIG Disu to serve in an acting capacity.
“In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect,” Mr. Onanuga’s statement confirmed.
The President expressed confidence in the new Acting IGP’s ability to steer the Force during this critical period, citing his extensive background in operational roles.
“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement added.
To formalize the transition, the Presidency outlined the next steps in compliance with the Police Act 2020. “In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” the statement explained.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the administration’s broader security priorities. “The President reiterates his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.”
