Police in Imo State have rescued a one-month-old baby who was initially declared dead at birth and uncovered a child trafficking syndicate. The rescue was part of a wider police operation that also targeted violent crime across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, during a press briefing in Owerri on Friday. He revealed that the Command had arrested 789 suspects over the past two months for various crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and terrorism.
The child trafficking case was a particularly shocking discovery. Police said the newborn baby had been declared dead at birth but was later found to have been stolen. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with this case, while two others are still being sought.
The rescued infant has now been safely reunited with its mother. This case highlights the disturbing methods used by trafficking rings to operate.
Beyond this specific rescue, the police operation achieved significant results. Commissioner Danjuma stated, “In the last two months, the Command arrested a total of 789 criminal suspects for offences ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, and cultism, to terrorism.”
The police also reported rescuing nine kidnapped victims and seven stolen children, most of whom have been returned to their families. Numerous weapons were recovered during the operations, including 17 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
The Commissioner thanked the state governor and the Inspector-General of Police for their support. He reassured residents that the police remain committed to protecting the people of Imo State, saying, “We remain resolute in our duty to protect lives and property.”
