The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has officially denied circulating reports of an attempted assassination on Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer who recently had a public confrontation with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, described the claims as “false and unverified,” stating that no such incident was reported or recorded anywhere within the nation’s capital.
The statement followed a wave of online reports and social media posts alleging that Lt. Yerima was trailed by armed men in two unmarked Hilux vans in the Kubwa area of Abuja.
The reports claimed the officer evaded his pursuers through a strategic manoeuvre during a high-speed chase.
These claims had quickly ignited public speculation, with many linking the alleged incident to the officer’s recent face-off with Minister Wike over a disputed land allocation in the Gaduwa District. A viral video from November 11 showed a heated argument between the two, during which the minister accused the officer of assaulting officials and illegally developing a plot of land.
The police statement sought to quell the rumours and prevent unnecessary panic.
“The command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory. The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims” SP Adeh said
The statement concluded by urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any genuine suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
