The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the opposition party remains a viable political force despite its lingering internal crisis.
Wike made the assertion on Sunday while addressing party delegates at the PDP’s 2026 national convention held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, where key stakeholders gathered to deliberate on the party’s future.
His remarks came in response to concerns raised by prominent figures within the party, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, who questioned whether the PDP would be able to field candidates in the next general election due to its internal divisions.
Addressing the doubts, Wike expressed confidence in the party’s survival and readiness, assuring members that the PDP would not only remain intact but would also be present on the ballot in 2027. He emphasised that the convention recognised and monitored by the electoral authorities reflected the legitimate structure of the party, reinforcing its standing as a credible political platform.
The former Rivers State governor used the occasion to commend party members who stood firm during the party’s most turbulent period, praising their resilience in the face of internal betrayal, factional disputes, and external criticism. According to him, those who remained loyal demonstrated commitment and courage at a time when the party’s unity was under severe threat.
He noted that despite the challenges, the PDP had successfully navigated a major leadership crisis that once cast doubt on its survival. Wike maintained that the party is now on a path of recovery, with renewed focus on repositioning itself to meet the expectations of Nigerians ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In his remarks, Wike also criticised the wave of defections that has affected the party in recent times, particularly among governors and key stakeholders. He described such moves as a reflection of weak leadership and a lack of political conviction, insisting that the PDP would emerge stronger as it rebuilds its internal structures.
He further assured party faithful that the rebuilding process would be inclusive, with opportunities for members across different levels to contribute to the party’s growth and direction. According to him, unity and collective purpose would be critical in restoring the PDP’s status as a formidable opposition force.
However, Wike’s position continues to generate controversy within the party and the broader political space. Although he remains a member of the PDP, he currently serves in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration.
His role in the Federal Executive Council, alongside his open support for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, has fueled ongoing tensions within the PDP, with many members questioning his loyalty and political alignment.
As the only PDP member serving in the current federal cabinet, Wike occupies a unique and controversial position, one that continues to spark debate as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With internal divisions, factional struggles, and defections still posing significant challenges, the PDP faces a critical period of rebuilding. Nonetheless, Wike’s declaration signals a message of confidence to party loyalists, even as uncertainty lingers over the party’s cohesion and future direction in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
