In a dramatic move that signals a major shake-up within the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled several of its high-profile members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose; and the party’s former Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
The decision was ratified on Saturday during the party’s national convention in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The motion for expulsion was moved by Chief Olabode George, a former National Vice Chairman of the party (South West), and was swiftly seconded by Hon. Samaila Buga, the Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State. The move underscores a significant purge of figures perceived as recalcitrant or aligned with rival political camps.
The expulsion of a sitting minister, Nyesom Wike, is particularly seismic and is expected to have profound implications for the nation’s political landscape.
Details of the convention proceedings and the specific charges against the expelled members are still emerging.
