In a dramatic pre-emptive move, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved its entire executive structure in Kano State, from the state level down to the wards. This decision comes amid confirmed reports that the state governor, Abba Yusuf, is on the verge of defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, announced the dissolution in a statement issued on Friday, stating it was carried out in accordance with the party’s constitution. He added that the NWC plans to soon appoint a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs in the state in the interim.
This radical action is the latest development in the protracted political crisis between Governor Yusuf and the party’s national leader and former governor of Kano, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The governor’s planned move to the APC is said to be strongly opposed by Kwankwaso.
The Kano State chapter of the APC has reportedly confirmed that Governor Yusuf is expected to formally join their party within days.
In his statement, Johnson said, “The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, after an emergency meeting, has, in accordance with the constitution of the party, announced the dissolution of its Executive Committees at the State, Local Government, and Ward levels in Kano State.”
He continued, “In line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the NWC resolved to appoint Caretaker Committees to act in the interim. Further instructions will be announced in due course.”
The party’s NWC thanked all the dissolved officers for their service and “assured them of the party’s appreciation for their invaluable contributions.”
This dissolution effectively clears the party’s leadership in Kano, which is largely loyal to Governor Yusuf, ahead of his anticipated exit, setting the stage for a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.
