The trade relationship between Nigeria and China has seen a significant surge, with bilateral trade growing by 34.7% to reach $15.48 billion in the first seven months of 2025.
This figure was announced by the Consul-General of the Peopleโs Republic of China in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing.
She disclosed the data on Sunday at a reception held to mark three occasions: the 76th anniversary of the founding of the Peopleโs Republic of China, Nigeriaโs 64th independence anniversary, and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Yuqing stated that the impressive growth โreflected the growing strength of China-Nigeria relations,โ confirming that Nigeria is now Chinaโs second-largest trading partner in Africa. She connected this success to the recent elevation of ties between the two countries to a โcomprehensive strategic partnershipโ at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit.
According to the envoy, this upgraded partnership has โcreated broader prospects for cooperation.โ She explained that collaboration has continued to deepen in key areas such as โinfrastructure, energy resources, trade, culture, and education,โ which she said was โbringing tangible benefits to citizens of both nations.โ
Yuqing also provided context on Chinaโs economic health, noting that despite global challenges, the countryโs economy โremains resilientโ after recording a 5.3% GDP growth in the first half of 2025. She commended the Chinese community in Nigeria for their role in contributing to โcultural exchanges, local development, and charity initiatives,โ urging them to remain โbridge-builders in strengthening China-Nigeria friendship.โ
She assured that her Consulate would continue to safeguard the welfare of Chinese nationals in Nigeria, โuphold the principle of diplomacy for the people,โ and focus on โresolving the urgent and difficult issuesโ faced by its compatriots.
The Consul-General pledged to provide โhigh-quality, efficient services and assistance to the best of our abilityโ to support the Chinese community in their work and daily lives.
