Nigeria Bleeds as Army Buries Fallen General And Soldiers Amid Escalating Terror Attacks And Growing Calls For Wartime Action

Grief hung thick in the air in Maiduguri as Nigeria on Wednesday confronted, once again, the brutal cost of a war that refuses to end, a war that continues to consume its bravest men and test the very fabric of its unity. Beneath the scorching Borno sun and the weight of a grieving nation, the remains of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Commander of the 29 Joint Task Force Brigade, Captain Ismail, and several other soldiers were lowered into the earth, their final resting place becoming yet another silent testimony to a conflict that has steadily evolved into something far more dangerous than insurgency.

What should have been a routine military defence of strategic positions turned into a devastating loss on April 9, when fighters suspected to belong to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province launched coordinated, near simultaneous attacks on multiple military formations in Benisheikh, a critical corridor along the Maiduguri Damaturu highway. The scale, precision, and timing of the attacks revealed a chilling reality: the enemy is no longer scattered or weakened, but adaptive, emboldened, and increasingly sophisticated.

In its official statement, the Nigerian Army did not mask the pain. “In a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony, the nation on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, laid to rest Late Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the statement read, capturing both the weight of loss and the dignity of sacrifice. It continued, “The burial, held at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, was marked by deep sorrow, honour and reflection.”

As the coffins, draped in national colours, were carried by fellow soldiers whose eyes betrayed both discipline and grief, the Army emphasized the depth of sacrifice. “Amidst grieving families and comrades, the fallen heroes were accorded full military honours in recognition of their selfless service and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation. Their sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid daily by members of the Armed Forces to safeguard the peace, unity, and security of Nigeria.”

Among those who witnessed the burial were key figures in Nigeria’s security architecture, including Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, alongside other senior officers. Their tributes, though measured, carried the unmistakable tone of a nation under siege.

“In their tributes,” the Army noted, “the Governor, the Minister of Defence, the CDS, and the COAS described the fallen soldiers as true patriots who stood firm in the face of danger and made the ultimate sacrifice so that others might live in safety.” It added, with a sense of enduring legacy, that their bravery “will continue to inspire generations and remain etched in the nation’s history.”

Yet, even as prayers were offered and bugles sounded the final farewell, the war refused to pause.

Barely hours after the burial, reports emerged of another deadly confrontation in Askira Uba Local Government Area, where troops of the 115 Task Force Battalion came under heavy attack. Four soldiers were killed in what sources described as a fierce gun battle that lasted close to an hour. According to a military insider, the attackers came prepared, heavily armed, and tactically aggressive.

“They attacked the 115 task force battalion in Askira Uba this afternoon. Four soldiers were killed. It was a gun battle between the troops and the insurgents. They were taken unawares, but the troops stood their ground,” the source revealed, a statement that underscores both the vulnerability and resilience of Nigerian troops in the field.

The violence has not only remained relentless but has also taken on increasingly complex dimensions. In Monguno, anger and suspicion boiled over as troops reportedly torched parts of the Charlie 2 community, accusing residents of collaborating with insurgents responsible for a recent deadly ambush that claimed the life of a commanding officer and six soldiers. The military’s action, though controversial, reflects the growing frustration within the ranks, where the line between civilian and collaborator is becoming dangerously blurred.

However, intervention from higher authorities reportedly halted the operation, with efforts now being made to open dialogue between the military, local government officials, and community leaders. It is a delicate balancing act in a war where trust is scarce and consequences are often immediate.

Beyond the battlefields of Borno, the crisis is metastasizing across the country. In Benue State, police authorities have initiated clearance operations in a bid to dislodge criminal elements and restore order. The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, issued a stern warning that left little room for ambiguity. “The command has sustained the deployment of tactical teams and is conducting targeted clearance operations in identified areas of concern,” he said, before adding a strong caution: “Anyone involved directly or indirectly in such activities will be treated as a collaborator in banditry and dealt with in accordance with the law.”

As security agencies struggle to contain the violence, influential socio political groups are raising the alarm in increasingly urgent tones. The Arewa Consultative Forum, in a communiqué that reads more like a warning than a statement, declared that Nigeria’s security crisis has crossed a dangerous threshold.

“Nigeria’s security crisis has moved far beyond a routine governance challenge; it has evolved from insurgency and criminality into a state of all out war that now threatens the continued existence of Nigeria as we know it,” the forum stated.

Signed by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Bashir Dalhatu, the communiqué did not mince words in describing the scale of devastation. “Families have been shattered, livelihoods destroyed, and entire generations traumatised. The scale of human suffering is unprecedented, and it continues to worsen,” it lamented, painting a grim picture of a nation bleeding on multiple fronts.

The economic implications, according to the forum, are equally dire. “Insecurity is now directly undermining Nigeria’s economy. Agriculture, especially in the North, is under severe threat. Supply chains are disrupted, inflation is worsening, and rural economies are collapsing,” it warned, linking security directly to national survival.

The forum’s recommendation was as stark as its diagnosis. “Extraordinary threats require extraordinary measures. Nigeria must temporarily suspend or scale down non essential projects and focus national energy, funding, and leadership attention on bringing the security crisis to an end without further delay,” it declared, calling for what it described as a wartime approach.

Echoing similar concerns, the Yoruba socio cultural group Afenifere expressed deep unease over the spread of violence into the South West. At a meeting held at the residence of its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, the group called for decisive and immediate action.

“The meeting, for the umpteenth time, expressed concern over the security situation in the country. Serious concern was expressed on the increasing terror acts in Yorubaland,” the communiqué read. It urged governors to act swiftly, stating, “Part of the actions can be strengthening Amotekun, paying more attention to surveillance and expediting actions on the setting up of state police.”

The group did not stop there. In a tone that suggests growing frustration, it warned of internal sabotage. “Government and security agencies, including the military, should look inward as insecurity continues to fester because there are internal collaborators,” it said, adding that “unscrupulous people who are collaborating with kidnappers, bandits and terrorists” must be exposed and dealt with.

International scrutiny is also intensifying. A United States lawmaker, Kimberly Daniels, openly challenged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action within his administration. “Immediate leadership review is necessary. The removal or redeployment of Minister Bello Matawalle will help restore the integrity of the defence ministry,” she stated.

Her concerns went further. “There must be a transparent investigation into allegations of high level complicity with banditry. The international community must ensure that those accused of aiding terrorism are held accountable,” she added, signaling a potential shift toward increased global pressure on Nigeria’s internal security management.

Backing these fears is data that tells a deeply troubling story. A March 2026 report revealed that within just one month, Nigeria recorded 345 deaths and 361 abductions across 36 separate incidents. “Seventy two per cent of the deaths were linked to terrorism (248 fatalities), driven by a resurgence of suicide bombings and coordinated attacks,” the report stated, highlighting the changing nature of the threat.

Even more alarming is the strategic evolution of insurgent tactics. “Guerrilla attacks on military bases have intensified, with senior officers among those killed in coordinated, high impact operations,” the report noted, reinforcing the idea that the military itself is increasingly becoming a primary target.

Amid all of this, the human voices from affected communities are growing louder. In Benue, youth leader Joseph Koriyol spoke with a mixture of anger and despair. “Benue is known as the food basket of the nation, but this identity is being eroded by incessant killings of our farmers without provocation. We can no longer access our farms due to fear of being killed,” he said, capturing the everyday reality of Nigerians trapped in conflict zones.

As the dust settles over freshly dug graves in Maiduguri, one truth stands stark and undeniable. Nigeria is no longer merely battling insurgency. It is confronting a widening, deeply entrenched conflict that is testing its military strength, political will, and national unity all at once.

And as the nation mourns its fallen heroes, the question that lingers is no longer whether the crisis is serious, but whether the response will finally match the scale of the war unfolding.
