Two elderly men, aged 84 and 75, have been arrested by Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly selling illegal drugs to teenage secondary school students in Umuahia, Abia State.
The 75-year-old suspect, Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, was apprehended on June 19, 2026, following a tip-off. NDLEA operatives searched his patent medicine store on Club Road and seized 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.
The other suspect, 84-year-old Godfrey Orji—a pensioner who also deals in illicit substances—was caught by security guards at Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia, for supplying drugs to two teenage students (names withheld). The guards handed him over to police, who transferred the case to the NDLEA on June 18.
During interrogation, a 15-year-old SS2 student confessed that the octogenarian supplied him with drugs, which he both consumed and resold to fellow students. Both elderly suspects are set to face prosecution, while the teenagers have been placed on counseling and rehabilitation programs.
In other operations, NDLEA agents intercepted a 9.5-kilogram shipment of ADB Chminaca—a synthetic cannabinoid classified as a dangerous new psychoactive substance—from China at a Lagos courier firm. On June 16, they also seized 300 grams of Loud, a potent cannabis strain, hidden in ladies’ handbags at another logistics company.
On June 19, NDLEA officers raided the home of wanted drug dealer Lukman Badmus (aka Lukman Ogombo) in Ajah, Lagos, recovering nine bottles of codeine syrup and 30 grams of skunk. A follow-up raid at his wife’s shop on Patey Island yielded two more codeine bottles and paraphernalia, plus 42 compressed blocks of skunk (22.5 kg) found in a minibus outside. The wife, Aisha Saraki, attempted to flush evidence but was stopped by operatives.
In Kogi State, officers arrested 33-year-old Tochukwu Onah along the Okene-Lokoja highway on June 19 with 1.030 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in custard containers. Meanwhile, a wanted couple—James Tony Chukwudi, 48, and James Kehinde, 35—linked to a 117-kilogram skunk seizure in Ekiti State on March 26, 2026, were caught on June 16 in Efon-Alaaye-Ekiti after months of evading capture.
In Oyo State, a June 20 raid in the Dangote area of Oyo town led to the arrest of 75-year-old Tudun Olubiyi, alongside Nasiru Buhari, 22, and Buba Musa, 47. Authorities seized 118 jumbo bags containing 1,416 kilograms of skunk covered with sawdust.
In Edo State, officers raided the Khagba forest in Owan East LGA on June 17, destroying 1,744.075 kilograms of cannabis and recovering 169 kilograms of processed skunk. Another operation at Ebora Camp in Esan South LGA destroyed 2,424.945 kilograms of cannabis and led to the arrest of 45-year-old Augustine Anyamone, who was found with 395 kilograms of skunk.
Throughout the past week, NDLEA commands nationwide continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities in schools, workplaces, worship centers, and communities. These included educational sessions at Orun Community Grammar School (Ekiti), Government Girls Secondary School (Kano), Federal Technical College (Nasarawa), Tafida Community Secondary School (Katsina), and Government Technical College (Anambra). In Rivers State, the command also paid an advocacy visit to the Paramount Ruler of Rumuogba, HRH Barr. Temple Ejekwu.
NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) praised the officers from the DOGI, Abia, Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, Kogi, and Edo Commands for their successful operations, highlighting their balanced approach to supply reduction and public awareness campaigns, while urging them and their colleagues nationwide to maintain their momentum.
