The National Assembly has initiated deliberations on a comprehensive constitutional review that includes proposals to create 55 new states and 278 local government areas across Nigeria.
The disclosure was made by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who chairs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review. Speaking at a joint retreat for Senate and House committees in Lagos, Jibrin outlined the massive scope of the task ahead. He revealed that the process has synthesized two years of public engagement into 69 distinct bills, 55 requests for new states, and 278 requests for new local governments.
Jibrin reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to passing “people-centred and timely” amendments, urging his colleagues to focus on delivering their promise to transmit the initial amendments to state legislatures before the year’s end. He called for patriotism and unity, warning against divisive tendencies during the sensitive review process.
