The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commended the exceptional bravery and sound judgement of its Alpha Jet pilots, who safely ejected from their aircraft following a sudden in-flight emergency.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of 6 December 2025 during a post-inspection functional check flight from Nigerian Air Force Base Kainji.
Shortly after take-off, the aircraft developed a serious technical malfunction, prompting an immediate emergency.
Displaying remarkable composure and professional discipline, the two pilots expertly manoeuvred the stricken jet away from populated areas before initiating a successful ejection sequence.
Both crew members landed safely and were swiftly recovered by standby NAF emergency teams. They are currently undergoing routine medical evaluation and are reported to be in stable condition.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised the airmen’s critical decision-making. “The courage, discipline, and, most importantly, the sound judgement exhibited by our Alpha Jet crew prevented what could have been a tragic loss of life. Their swift and correct actions in a moment of extreme pressure exemplify the highest standards of NAF training and professionalism,”
Air Marshal Aneke stated.
The CAS has directed the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry to thoroughly investigate the cause of the in-flight emergency.
The NAF also extended its acknowledgement to the Search and Rescue teams, Fire and Crash Response units, and medical personnel whose prompt, coordinated response secured the area and ensured the crew’s wellbeing.
“This incident highlights the inherent risks of military aviation and the unwavering commitment of all NAF personnel, who operate daily in high-risk conditions to secure our nation,” the statement added.
The service reassured the public of its steadfast adherence to stringent safety standards and operational excellence, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding both its personnel and the Nigerian public.
