The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its aerial campaign against insurgent groups in the North-East, delivering a decisive blow to a major terrorist enclave in the Lake Chad region as part of ongoing operations under Operation HADIN KAI.
The strike, which targeted Kangarwa in the Northern Tumbuns area of Borno State, represents one of the most significant recent offensives against insurgent strongholds believed to be linked to ISWAP elements operating within the Lake Chad basin.
According to a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the airstrike was executed at approximately 1205 hours on April 1 by the Air Component of the Joint Task Force North East.
The operation, he explained, was the result of credible intelligence gathering and sustained aerial surveillance, which confirmed the presence of террорист fighters and revealed heightened activity within the enclave. Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions had reportedly tracked movements, logistics coordination, and patterns of habitation within the settlement over a period of time.
These findings provided the basis for a coordinated and targeted assault.
Once the targets were verified, NAF air assets carried out precision strike missions, launching multiple attack runs on strategically identified locations within the enclave. The strikes focused on both visible structures and concealed positions believed to be critical to the group’s operations.
Military officials described the bombardment as highly effective, noting that several террорист инфраструктures were destroyed. These included logistics hubs, storage facilities, and operational shelters used by fighters to coordinate activities and sustain their presence in the region.
The impact of the strikes extended beyond infrastructure damage. According to the Air Force, scores of fighters were neutralised during the operation, significantly reducing the combat strength of the террорист cell and disrupting its operational network.
The destruction of the enclave is expected to weaken insurgent influence in the Northern Tumbuns corridor, an area long considered a strategic hideout due to its difficult terrain and proximity to Lake Chad. The region has historically served as a transit and regrouping point for insurgents, enabling cross-border movement and coordination.
Officials say the success of the operation underscores the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven air campaigns in modern counter-insurgency efforts. By combining real-time surveillance with precision targeting, the military has increasingly been able to strike high-value террорист locations while minimising collateral damage.
Beyond the immediate tactical gains, the airstrike is also expected to create favourable conditions for ground troops. With the террорист enclave dismantled and resistance weakened, land forces are now better positioned to advance into the area, establish control, and conduct clearance operations aimed at rooting out any remaining угрозы.
The operation highlights the evolving synergy between Nigeria’s air and ground forces, a strategy that has become central to the fight against insurgency in the North-East. Coordinated efforts between different branches of the military have been credited with recent gains in reclaiming территорияs and disrupting insurgent supply chains.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, reiterated the Air Force’s commitment to sustaining pressure on террорист groups through continuous, intelligence-led strikes. He emphasised that the campaign would remain relentless until all identified enclaves are neutralised and the operational capacity of insurgents is fully degraded.
Aneke also stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination with ground forces to deny insurgents freedom of movement and prevent the re-establishment of destroyed hideouts.
The Lake Chad region remains a critical theatre in Nigeria’s security landscape, given its strategic importance and the presence of multiple insurgent factions operating across national borders. As such, sustained military pressure is seen as essential not only for immediate security gains but also for long-term stability.
While military authorities have recorded progress through operations such as this, analysts note that lasting peace in the region will require a combination of sustained security efforts, regional cooperation, and socio-economic interventions to address the underlying drivers of insurgency.
For now, the latest airstrike marks a significant operational success, reinforcing the military’s resolve to dismantle террорист networks and restore security across the North-East.
