The former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, spent Monday night at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as interrogations over dozens of bank accounts allegedly connected to him reached a new intensity.
According to an associate of Malami who spoke to TheCable, the former minister was invited for questioning on Monday but arrived late in the evening, leading to an overnight session where he continued responding to investigators’ queries.
The associate further disclosed that a major line of the EFCC’s inquiry revolves around 46 bank accounts currently under investigation for alleged links to Malami.
As the probe continues, the former AGF has been instructed to report to the commission’s office daily.
In 2023, it was reported that Malami would be questioned over at least five suspicious multi-million dollar transactions from his time in office under the Buhari administration. The deals under scrutiny include:
· A $496 million payment to Global Steel Holdings Ltd as a settlement for the terminated Ajaokuta Steel concession, despite the company having waived claims years earlier.
· The handling of the sale of billions of naira in assets forfeited to the EFCC by politically exposed persons.
· The controversial $419 million judgment debt paid to consultants for the Paris Club refunds to states.
· An agreement to pay Sunrise Power $200 million in compensation over the Mambilla power project dispute.
· Duplicated legal fees in the transfer of a $321 million Abacha loot recovery from Switzerland to Nigeria.
Following a previous interrogation session on November 29, Malami had stated on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the engagement with the anti graft agency was “successful” and that he had been scheduled for “further engagement.”
The intensified probe comes as Malami, who resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in July and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has declared his intention to contest the Kebbi State governorship election in 2027.
