Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a N10,000 transportation allowance for workers in the state as part of measures to cushion the impact of the recent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit.
The approval was disclosed on Monday by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Kayode Martins, in a statement issued in Ibadan.
According to the statement, the allowance followed a formal request by the state chapter of the NLC, which had earlier called on the government to intervene in the face of rising transportation costs and economic pressure on workers.
“Following the intervention and formal request made by the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress earlier this morning, the State Government has approved a N10,000 transportation allowance for all workers in the state,” the statement read.
It added that the allowance would take effect from April 2026, providing relief for workers grappling with increased commuting expenses driven by prevailing economic conditions.
“This development comes as a direct response to sustained advocacy by the state NLC, aimed at cushioning the impact of increased living expenses on the workforce,” the statement added, noting that further details on implementation would be communicated by relevant authorities.
Governor Makinde later confirmed the development during the kick-off of the N1.5bn YEAP-SAfER disbursement programme on Monday, stating that the allowance would be implemented for an initial period of three months, beginning from April.
The intervention is part of broader efforts by the state government to mitigate the economic strain on residents following fuel price adjustments, which have triggered a spike in transportation and living costs across the country.
