John Chuma Nwosu, one of the governorship aspirants under the Labour Party (LP), has announced his withdrawal from the party’s Anambra State primary election, scheduled for today, April 5, 2025.
He made the announcement in statement on Friday, accusing the party officials at both the national and state levels of engaging in illegalities that undermine democratic processes.
Nwosu’s decision followed the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, which sacked Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
According to Nwosu, Abure’s removal invalidates all actions taken under his leadership, including preparations for the Anambra governorship primaries.
Allegations of Fraudulent Delegates’ List
The aspirant highlighted several irregularities, including the failure to conduct a legitimate delegates’ congress across Anambra’s 21 local government areas. Despite this, a disputed list of delegates surfaced and was allegedly altered multiple times before being posted at the party secretariat just eight hours before the primaries, a clear violation of electoral guidelines.
“Any outcome of the primary elections as scheduled will be tainted with severe irregularities, illegalities and will be unacceptable”, Nwosu stated. He said, participating in such a charade would endorse the erosion of due process and offend my integrity, Christian values, and principles.
Nwosu expressed confidence that his supporters would understand his decision, emphasizing his commitment to credible and transparent political processes.
” I stand ready to serve and participate in future political processes that are credible transparent and fair” he said.
The Labour Party has yet to issue an official response to Nwosu’s withdrawal or the allegations of malpractice. However, his exit raises concerns about the credibility of the party’s primary and the potential for legal challenges against its eventual candidate.
