The Senator Nenadi Usman led Labour Party has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “rise to the occasion and rescue our democracy from imminent collapse” following what it described as a “mockery of democracy” during Saturday’s by-elections across Nigeria.
In a strongly-worded statement, the opposition party alleged widespread irregularities including “large-scale rigging, brazen vote-buying, and violence” during polls held in several states.
The party’s factional national chairman’s media adviser, Ken Eluma Asogwa, claimed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had colluded with security agencies to undermine the electoral process
It framed the by-elections as “a dangerous dress rehearsal of what may befall us in 2027 if citizens do not act swiftly to halt this brigandage.” They directly addressed President Tinubu, warning: “History will be most unkind to President Tinubu if he permits the hawks around him to push him into further desecrating our democracy in the narrow pursuit of retaining power.”
The 400-word statement concluded by calling on the president to “rise to the occasion and rescue our democracy from imminent collapse,” citing what it called “overwhelming rejection by a weary citizenry already pauperised by ill-conceived policies.”
Electoral observers had reported various irregularities during the by-elections, though not to the comprehensive degree alleged in the Labour Party statement.
INEC officials maintain they conducted the polls according to established guidelines, while the APC has dismissed the allegations as unfounded. Political analysts note such strongly-worded statements reflect growing tensions between Nigeria’s major political parties as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
