President Bola Tinubu has approved national honours for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
Each player will receive $100,000, while members of the technical crew have been awarded $50,000. Additionally, the team has been granted residential apartments in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the rewards on behalf of the president during a reception at the State House on Monday.
Nigeria secured the continental title after defeating Mali 78-64 in Sunday’s final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan. The victory marks Nigeria’s fifth consecutive Afrobasket championship, making them the only nation to achieve such a feat in the tournament’s history.
The win also guarantees D’Tigress an automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
At the ceremony, President Tinubu conferred the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) award on all squad members in recognition of their historic achievement.
This follows a similar honour recently bestowed on the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to celebrating sporting excellence.
