…Raises alarm over threats to life
Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, has issued a bold challenge to Peter Obi, Joe Ajaero, and other Labour Party key officials, daring them to take legal action over his claims that they are engaged in “political subversion” against Nigeria’s democracy.
Arabambi in press statement made available to journalists on Thursday, insisted that he stands by his accusations, despite what he describes as “a torrent of death threats” from supporters of the other faction of Labour Party.
Spear News reports that the Labour Party chieftain had in a petition dated 29th July 2025, urged Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to arrest Peter Obi, Joe Ajaero, and others over an alleged plot to destabilise the country through a “One Million March Rally.”
However, the LP’s factional interim chairperson, Nenadi Usman, through her media adviser, Ken Asogwa, dismissed claims of a planned protest as a “malicious frame up,” stating the party neither authorised nor sanctioned any march.
She clarified that after the Supreme Court affirmed her leadership on April 4, 2025, the LP had requested security agencies to vacate “illegal occupants” from its old secretariat but relocated due to inaction.
Usman called the coup allegation “fictitious,” questioning how a property dispute became a plot to overthrow the government, warning against a return to era of political witch-hunts.
However, Arabambi has maintained the veracity of his claims and stands prepared to substantiate them in a court of competent jurisdiction.
He said: “If these individuals truly believe my statements to be defamatory or without merit, I welcome – indeed, I challenge them – to seek legal redress in the competent courts of our land.
“The courtroom, not the court of public opinion fueled by social media sensationalism, is the appropriate arena to determine the truth of these grave allegations” Arabambi declared.
The Labour Party chieftain did not mince words in his condemnation of Obi’s post-election conduct, accusing him of “a deliberate strategy to create the false impression of a failed state.”
He pointed to Obi’s refusal to concede the 2023 presidential election, despite the Supreme Court’s affirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s victory, as evidence of what he termed “undemocratic and dangerous behaviour.”
“Since his electoral defeat in February 2023, Mr. Obi has transformed what should have been a statesmanlike opposition role into a relentless campaign of national demarketing,” Arabambi said.
“He has not conceded defeat, has not congratulated President Tinubu, and maintains complete silence on the escalating insecurity in his Southeast stronghold while immediately condemning any security incident in other regions. This goes beyond normal political opposition – it is a calculated attempt to undermine governance”, he added.
Arabambi’s statement took a more alarming turn as he revealed that his life has been under threat since making these allegations. “Let me state unequivocally that should any harm befall me or my family, Peter Obi and his violent supporters must be held directly accountable,” he warned.
“This climate of intimidation reflects the very political terrorism I previously warned about, and it is unacceptable in a constitutional democracy”, he lamented.
He further accused Obi of employing “primitive tactics and crude self help measures” in his quest for power, drawing parallels to what he called the former Anambra governor’s “undemocratic tendencies” during his time in office.
“Nigeria now has a duly elected President who not only won a legitimate mandate through the ballot box but also had this victory conclusively affirmed by the Supreme Court.
“Obi’s refusal to accept this reality reveals a disturbing pattern of resorting to extra-constitutional means when electoral outcomes don’t favour him”, Arabambi stated.
Turning his attention to Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Arabambi levelled even more serious accusations, including the federal government alleged “provision of NLC facilities for activities related to terrorism” activities and “the promotion of civil disobedience”
He referenced pending treason charges against Ajaero, questioning where “legitimate labour activism ends and political subversion begins.”
With a defiant tone, Arabambi insisted that he is prepared to back his claims with evidence in court.
“I am fully prepared to substantiate every claim with documented evidence, present witnesses to corroborate these serious allegations, and subject my assertions to the most rigorous judicial scrutiny.
“The days of making wild accusations in the media only to retreat when challenged must end. If these individuals have nothing to hide, they should welcome this opportunity for judicial clarity” he said.
The Labour Party chieftain framed his challenge as a defence of Nigeria’s democracy, which he described as “too precious to be sacrificed on the altar of political ambition.” He concluded with a direct provocation: “The challenge stands: Let’s meet in court.”
