The police on Monday dragged a 37-year-old man, Hassan Sodiq, before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged N16 million fraud.
The defendant, whose address was not stated, is standing trial on charges bordering on conspiracy, fraud, and causing a breach of the peace.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2018 at about 10:00 a.m. in the Ilogbo area of Badagry.
He alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N16 million from different account holders and transferred it to the account of Bashiru Saheed.
“The defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace, by using one Eko Bank account belonging to Bashiru Saheed to obtain people’s money,” he said.
The chief magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail of two million naira with three sureties in the like sum.
He ordered that one of the sureties must be a company director.
The court adjourned the case until May 21 for mention.
