ABUJA, Nigeria โ The Labour Party has announced Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following what the party described as a broad-based consensus among its members and stakeholders.
The announcement was made in Abuja on May 30, 2026, in a statement signed by the partyโs National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa.
According to the statement, Okereke emerged as the partyโs preferred candidate after consultations and endorsements from key stakeholders within the party.
The Labour Party described Okereke as a governance expert, policy strategist and advocate of institutional reforms, noting that he has established a reputation in the areas of public policy, legislative governance and institutional development.
Okereke currently serves as President of ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, a policy and legislative research institution. He is also a legislative consultant to committees and ranking members of the National Assembly.
In addition, he is a resident lecturer in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University, Abuja, where he teaches governance and public administration-related courses.
The party highlighted his academic credentials, stating that he holds a doctorate degree in Legislative Governance Studies, as well as masterโs degrees in Public Administration and Legislative Studies, both earned with distinction.
Labour Party officials said Okerekeโs experience in governance, public accountability and national development, alongside his contributions to public discourse, positioned him as a suitable candidate to lead the party into the 2027 presidential contest.
The statement further noted that Okereke has been involved in initiatives focused on youth empowerment, educational development and democratic reforms.
The Labour Party said his emergence reflects its commitment to promoting what it described as competent, accountable and transformational leadership ahead of the 2027 election.
Nigeriaโs next presidential election is scheduled for 2027, with political parties expected to intensify consultations and preparations in the coming months.
