The Labour Party’s National Caretaker Committee has strongly endorsed Peter Obi’s participation in national coalition talks, dismissing criticisms from suspended former chairman Julius Abure and his associates as “baseless and anti-party.”
In an official statement released on Monday, the party leadership clarified that Obi’s involvement in the movement to unseat the APC government in 2027 received full authorization from the legitimate party structure led by Senator Nenadi Usman.
“Mr. Obi’s commitment to tackling hunger, insecurity and poor governance through this coalition perfectly aligns with our party’s core principles,” stated Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to Senator Usman. “It’s ironic that those expelled for anti-party activities now question this nationally beneficial initiative.”
The statement particularly targeted Abure’s faction for referencing what it termed an “illegal” 2024 national convention, noting that the Supreme Court had already nullified the gathering. The party warned the public against recognizing communications from the Abure group, describing them as “impostors.”
While fully backing the coalition efforts, the Labour Party maintained that Obi retains the undisputed right to contest the 2027 elections on its platform should the alliance fail to materialize.
This development comes as opposition groups intensify efforts to form a united front against President Tinubu’s administration ahead of the next general elections.
