The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, has pledged the full support of the Federal Government to the Edo State Governmentโs proposed airline project, Edo Air.
The pledge was made on Thursday during a high-level meeting between the Minister and the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at the ministerโs office in Abuja.
The discussions centered on the strategic Edo Air initiative, a cornerstone of Governor Okpebholoโs administration aimed at transforming the state into a regional hub for business, logistics, and tourism by improving air connectivity, stimulating commerce, and creating jobs.
Governor Okpebholo described the meeting as “fruitful” and a critical part of his administrationโs economic development agenda. He emphasised that establishing a state-backed airline is essential for positioning Edo State as a prime destination for investment.
โMy administration remains fully committed to doing everything necessary to position Edo as a standout destination for development and investment. The establishment of Edo Air will significantly boost economic activities, enhance tourism, and make transportation easier and more reliable for our people and investors alike,โ the Governor stated.
In his response, Minister Keyamo welcomed the vision and drew a historic parallel, recalling Benin Cityโs pioneering role in Nigerian aviation through the defunct Okada Air. He expressed his delight at Edo Stateโs deliberate steps to revive that legacy, noting that the initiative aligns perfectly with the Federal Governmentโs objectives of enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic growth through aviation.
โThe Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development is fully behind this visionary project,โ Keyamo said. โA functional, state-backed airline will not only improve passenger movement but will also boost trade, attract direct investment, and create substantial employment opportunities for Nigerians, particularly our youths.โ
The Minister assured the Governor of the ministryโs collaboration in navigating the regulatory framework and providing necessary guidance to ensure the projectโs successful takeoff.
Governor Okpebholo expressed his appreciation for the Ministerโs endorsement and support, describing the Federal Governmentโs partnership as vital. โWe are encouraged by the Federal Governmentโs willingness to partner with Edo State on this important project. Together, we will build an aviation system that supports growth, tourism, and regional development,โ he said.
The meeting concluded with a reinforced commitment to collaboration between both levels of government, signaling a clear pathway forward for the Edo Air initiative and marking a potential new chapter in the stateโs transportation and economic landscape.
