The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has assured the public of continued improvements to the new cashless policy at airports across the country, appealing for patience as the system undergoes its first major review.
This was contained in a short statement released via his social media handle on Wednesday.
The Minister confirmed that the policy, which officially kicked off on March 1, 2026, is part of a determined effort by the government to eliminate corruption and optimise revenue at all payment points.
Keyamo revealed that he and his team are concluding the first week of the initiative and will be conducting a thorough review of its implementation. “By the end of this week, I, along with my team, will be reviewing the first one week of our going cashless at all our payment points at airports across the country in order to eliminate corruption and optimise revenue,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the transition has not been without its challenges, the Minister addressed growing complaints from passengers regarding traffic flow and efficiency at airport terminals. Some travellers have reported that the new digital-only payment system has inadvertently led to congestion and delays.
“We will surely improve the efficiency of the new system as time progresses by developing new ideas,” Keyamo stated, directly responding to the concerns. He emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to ending cash collections, adding, “this government is determined to end the practice of collecting cash at our gates. Kindly bear with us, please.”
