The Nigerian aviation sector has announced significant new measures to combat climate change, firmly aligning with the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
The initiative is being driven forward by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN) in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the country’s aviation industry.
The plans were detailed at a stakeholdersโ forum in Abuja on Tuesday, which focused on managing airport carbon emissions.
The Minister emphasised that sustainability must now be central to the growth of Nigerian aviation. He stated that achieving international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) would not only reduce environmental impact but also boost the countryโs standing as a competitive global aviation hub.
Speaking through the Permanent Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Kana, Keyamo commended the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for organising the event. He called for a united effort from all sectors of the industry to make these ambitions a reality.
โCollaboration among airlines, ground handlers, concessionaires, regulators, and energy providers is crucial to reducing emissions,โ the Minister said.
He outlined several key initiatives that would be pursued, including the electrification of airport operations, the introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and waste-to-energy projects.
Keyamo was clear that this was both an environmental and economic priority. He described the accreditation as a signal to the world โthat Nigeria is open for sustainable aviation business.โ This proactive approach, he noted, positions the aviation sector not just as a participant, but as a leader in fulfilling President Bola Tinubuโs Renewed Hope Agenda and the Energy Transition Plan.
The forum, which took place on 9 September 2025, brought together a wide range of key organisations. Attendees included representatives from aviation agencies such as the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).
Also present were officials from the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), airline operators, ground handling companies, fuel marketers, and other service providers.
This meeting marks a concrete step in Nigeriaโs broader strategy to translate its climate commitments into measurable action, ensuring the aviation industry plays a defining role in securing a sustainable economic future for the nation.
