Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has made a stunning claim that his administration inherited a state treasury with a negative balance of just N9,075 from his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje. He has publicly challenged the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to defend its record of governance.
Governor Yusuf launched his criticism on Thursday during an event to distribute permanent job offers to 4,315 teachers. He accused Mr. Ganduje’s government of failing to deliver meaningful development projects during its eight years in office and of severely depleting the state’s finances.
He alleged that the previous administration oppressed civil servants and pensioners, sold teaching jobs, and looted the state’s resources.
“They destroyed Kano,” Mr Yusuf declared. “They looted your money without meaningful projects. If I expose their atrocities, you will not sleep tonight.”
He directly contrasted this with his own event, stating, “They oppressed teachers, civil servants and pensioners. If it were during their time, these offers would have been sold to you. But today, nobody has paid a dime.”
The governor specifically dared the former governor to point to his achievements, saying, “If they can, let them show us just four projects completed in their eight years.”
Despite what he called an empty treasury, Governor Yusuf maintained that his government has saved billions of naira by blocking financial leakages. He stated these funds are now being channelled into key projects and services for the people of Kano.
“That is why you see recruitment of teachers, road projects, renovation and reconstruction of schools, farming support, empowerment programmes,” he said. “Payment of pensions and gratuities, reopening of boarding schools, street lights and many other projects.”
At the same event, the governor directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to begin recruiting another batch of teachers under the BESDA programme. He also announced soft loans of N100,000 each for 2,000 teachers under the board.
