The Kaduna State Government is set to commence its free transport service for civil servants, retirees, and students starting Monday, July 7, 2025, as part of the Kaduna Subsidized Transport Scheme (KSTS).
The initiative, announced by the Director General of the Kaduna State Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, in a statement on Saturday, will provide free rides for the first six months before transitioning to a 60% fare subsidy for the general public.
Ibrahim noted that the programme reflects Governor Uba Saniโs dedication to improving the welfare of workers, students, and senior citizens.
โThis gesture underscores His Excellencyโs commitment to alleviating the economic burden on our people,โ he said. The free service will operate under strict guidelines to ensure order, security, and efficiency.
To prevent misuse, civil servants must present valid staff ID cards alongside a matching National Identification Number (NIN) before boarding. โOnly genuine government workers will be granted access to the buses,โ Ibrahim stated.
Similarly, students from both public and private institutionsโranging from primary to tertiary levelsโwill be allowed free rides if they are in full school uniforms. โStudents must be properly dressed to benefit from this initiative,โ the statement clarified.
Additionally, personnel from recognized security agencies will also enjoy the service upon proper identification.
The buses will operate along three major routes: RigachikunโKawoโKasuwaโSabo (and vice versa), RigachikunโKawoโIndependence WayโYakowa Road (and return), and Tudun WadaโPoly RoadโSokoto RoadโKawo (and back). Engr. Ibrahim urged commuters to maintain decorum while boarding, warning against unruly behavior. โThere should be no unnecessary rushing or queue-jumping. Law and order will be strictly enforced,โ he said.
The initiative follows President Bola Tinubuโs commissioning of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in Kaduna on June 19, 2025, as part of efforts to promote sustainable and affordable public transportation. The state governmentโs move is expected to significantly ease mobility challenges for thousands of residents while reducing transportation costs.
