Staff members at Lagos State University (LASU), including both academic and non-academic personnel, have began an indefinite strike due to unresolved welfare concerns and other disputes with the university administration.
While specific details regarding the workers’ grievances remain unclear at this time, sources confirm that the strike took effect on Thursday, July 31.
In a formal letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, dated July 31, 2025, the leaders of the four university unions declared that the strike would persist until their demands are fully addressed.
The unions—comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)—operate under the Joint Action Committee. They confirmed that the decision to proceed with the indefinite strike was made during an Emergency Congress.
The notice, signed by Prof. Ibrahim Bakare (ASUU-LASU Chairman), Sylvester Idowu (ASUU-LASU Secretary), Oluwaseyi Lawal (SSANU-LASU Chairman), and Waheed Majekodunmi (SSANU-LASU Secretary), formally announced the commencement of the industrial action. It stated that all university staff, including those at affiliated campuses such as LASUCOM and LASU Epe Campus, must withdraw their services immediately and stay away from work until further notice.
“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of Staff Members are met by the appropriate authorities.
“Consequently, all members of staff of the University and its affiliate Campuses (LASUCOM and LASU Epe Campus) are hereby DIRECTED to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty post with immediate effect.
“While we thank you for your kind gesture and support always, accept, please, the assurances of the Unions’ kindest regards.’’, the notice read.
