At least 12 people were killed on Sunday when Israeli forces bombed a house in Gaza City, marking the latest in a series of deadly attacks across the besieged Palestinian territory.
The strike comes just a day after 78 Palestinians were reportedly killed in similar assaults, with 27 more casualties recorded across Gaza Sunday alone.
The Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli forces have now killed at least 743 people in attacks targeting locations affiliated with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) since late May. The GHF, which operates with backing from both the United States and Israel, has been at the center of several controversial Israeli operations in recent weeks.
Since the war began following the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on southern Israel — in which 1,139 Israelis were killed and more than 200 people were taken captive — Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 57,338 Palestinians have been killed, with 135,957 wounded.
The situation on the ground remains dire, as Israeli air and ground operations continue across the densely populated Strip, pushing the humanitarian crisis to what aid agencies describe as “catastrophic levels.”
Despite the escalating violence, there appears to be a faint glimmer of diplomacy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed Sunday that Israel will send a negotiating team to Qatar to resume ceasefire talks. However, the statement also emphasized that recent changes to the proposed deal requested by Hamas are deemed “unacceptable”.
The renewed diplomatic contact comes amid growing international pressure on both sides to halt hostilities and reach a sustainable agreement. Yet, with civilian casualties mounting and core disagreements unresolved, a resolution remains uncertain.
Rescue workers in Gaza City reported pulling the bodies of women and children from the rubble of the bombed home, with local hospitals overwhelmed and running critically low on supplies. “The devastation is unimaginable,” said one medic at al-Shifa Hospital, adding that the current wave of airstrikes has been among the deadliest in recent weeks.
The UN and humanitarian agencies have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire, citing the immense toll on civilians and the widespread destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals.
