The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked a fraudulent publication circulating online, which purports to be a special announcement by the Commission regarding issues affecting the list of governorship candidates in six states: Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe, and Kano.
In a public notice issued by the Commission, INEC stated that the publication is fake and did not originate from it. “The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the notice read.
INEC urged members of the public to disregard the fraudulent publication and refrain from sharing it, advising that they rely solely on official notices, press releases, and other information issued through the Commission’s verified communication channels, which include its website at www.inecnigeria.org, its Facebook page, INEC Nigeria, its X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram handles, @inecnigeria, and its news portal at www.inecnews.com.
The Commission further clarified that any information suggesting it has issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the aforementioned states is false. It called on the public to remain vigilant and verify all electoral information through its official communication channels to avoid being misled by false or fraudulent publications.
For enquiries and further clarification, members of the public may contact INEC through its Call Centre on 0700-CALL-INEC (0700-2255-4632), its Short Code, 4632, or by phone on 090844444333 and 09050858629. The Commission can also be reached by email at iccc@inec.gov.ng, through its website at www.inecnigeria.org, and via its news portal at www.inecnews.com.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to keeping the public accurately informed and urged everyone to disregard the fraudulent publication and obtain electoral information only from INEC’s official communication channels.
