The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an adjustment to the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, extending the deadline for political parties to submit their registers of members.
The decision, contained in a press statement issued on Friday, March 27, 2026, follows a meeting between the Commission and political parties held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
According to the statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, concerns were raised during the meeting regarding the timeline for the submission of party membership registers. The original deadline, as contained in the revised timetable, was set for April 21, 2026.
In response, the Commission agreed to adjust the submission period to align with the provisions of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which stipulates that registers must be submitted no later than 21 days before party primaries.
Under the revised arrangement, political parties are now free to fix the dates of their primaries within the approved window of April 23, 2026, to May 30, 2026. Consequently, the deadline for the submission of membership registers has been extended to May 10, 2026—an adjustment from the previous April 21 deadline.
“It is imperative that parties adhere to this timeline to ensure a smooth electoral process,” Haruna stated.
The Commission urged all political parties to take note of the changes and comply with the new schedule as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.
