Dr. Idris Abdul’aziz Dutsen Tanshi, a prominent Islamic scholar and Chief Imam of the Dutsen Tanshi Jummaat Mosque in Bauchi, has died following a prolonged illness.
The respected Sunni cleric reportedly passed away shortly after returning from India, where he had been receiving medical treatment. Despite his health challenges, Dr. Abdul’aziz remained active in Islamic scholarship and religious discourse for as long as he could.
A close associate, Abdulhakeem Shaaban Baban Keke, confirmed the news of his passing during an interview on Thursday night. He revealed that the cleric died in Bauchi not long after arriving back in the country.
Widely admired for his steadfast commitment to the Sunnah and his vocal stance against religious innovations (Bid’ah), Dr. Abdul’aziz was affectionately known among his followers as “Dr. Tauhidi,” in recognition of his dedication to promoting monotheism and authentic Islamic teachings.
He was known for his eloquent sermons and teachings, which resonated with audiences across Nigeria and West Africa. His absence during the last Ramadan and the recent Eid celebrations, due to his health condition, was notably felt by his followers.
In addition to his religious roles, Dr. Abdul’aziz was a strong advocate for Islamic education and reform. He established several institutions aimed at nurturing future scholars and leaders within the Muslim community.
