The Nigerian aviation sector has been thrust into the spotlight yet again after a viral video captured a female passenger, identified as Ms. Comfort Emmanson (also known as Comfort Bob), physically assaulting crew members aboard an Ibom Air flight.
The incident, which occurred on August 10, 2025, aboard Flight Q153 from Uyo to Lagos, has prompted swift action from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo, who has declared “enough is enough” and vowed to enforce stricter measures to curb such disruptions.
According to investigations, the altercation began when the passenger refused to switch off her phone during take-off, a violation of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. “The whole unfortunate incident arose because of the refusal of the passenger to switch off her phone during take-off as required by extant International Civil Aviation Regulations,” Ibom Air stated in its official response.
The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, with the passenger allegedly attacking both flight attendants and ground staff before being subdued.
In response, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo revealed that he had held emergency discussions with the Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Chief Operating Officer of Ibom Air.
“Apart from the indefinite flight ban imposed on the said unruly passenger (both local and international) by the NCAA, the police promptly arraigned her this morning at the Ikeja Magistratesโ Court for criminal offences,” the minister confirmed. Court documents seen by journalists indicated that the accused was remanded at Kirikiri Prisons after failing to provide adequate sureties.
While condemning the passengerโs behaviour, Keyamo also expressed dismay over the circulation of footage showing her in a state of indecent exposure during the altercation. “Whilst we support the filming of her recalcitrant behaviour as evidence to prosecute her, what is deplorable is to release such evidence containing indecent exposure to the public to ridicule her. That is totally unacceptable to us,” he stated. The minister directed that the staff member responsible for leaking the compromising footage be identified and sanctioned, emphasising that “we will not fold our arms and tolerate the debasing of womanhood.”
Beyond punitive measures, Keyamo announced new directives aimed at preventing future occurrences. “I have directed that airlines must continue to train and retrain their staff in public relations and how to deal with potentially explosive situations in order to diffuse them promptly or nip them in the bud,” he said. He further mandated a joint security meeting involving aviation agencies next week to improve coordination in handling similar incidents.
The minister reminded passengers of the established channels for addressing grievances, stressing that violent reactions would not be tolerated. “For genuinely aggrieved passengers, there are clearly laid-down remedies to address grievances. The Consumer Protection Directorate of the NCAA has consistently advertised these remedies, and there is no point trying to take the laws into oneโs hands, which may lead to dire consequences,” he warned.
Keyamo assured the public that the aviation sector would maintain a zero-tolerance stance against misconduct. “We will continue to apply equal sanctions available to us in aviation on any such erring passengersโthat is, lengthy flight bansโand report the matters to other law enforcement agencies to do their bit within their powers,” he declared.
The incident has reignited debates on passenger behaviour and airline staff preparedness in Nigeriaโs aviation industry. With Keyamoโs latest directives, stakeholders will be watching closely to see if these measures translate into improved safety and professionalism across the sector.
