The Edo State Government has mandated that all public servants, political appointees, and government functionaries intending to contest for elective positions in the forthcoming electoral cycle must resign their current appointments on or before 1st March 2026.
The directive dated February 28, 2026, issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., requires affected officers to resign prior to participating in any political party primaries or related electoral processes.
This measure aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026, ensuring that aspiring candidates do not face disqualification by electoral authorities.
According to the government, the requirement is designed to promote fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all aspirants, while upholding the integrity and neutrality of public institutions.
The administration emphasised that the responsibilities of governance must remain distinct from partisan political engagements.
All affected officers have been advised to take immediate steps to comply with the directive within the stipulated timeline.
The Senator Monday Okpebholo-led administration reaffirmed its commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law, and strict adherence to due process in matters of governance and political participation.
