Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a N1 million cash gift for each of the Edo citizens who recently returned home following the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The Governor who personally received the returnees today, described their safe return as a moment of joy and renewed hope for the state.
“Home will always be a place of hope and new beginnings,” Governor Okpebholo said. “We are here to support you, not just with words, but with practical action.”
As part of the reintegration package, each returnee will receive N1 million as a cash gift to help them secure accommodation and settle back into the community. The Governor noted that this immediate financial support is designed to ease the trauma of displacement and provide stability upon arrival.
In addition to the cash gift, the Okpebholo administration will provide access to soft loans, enabling the returnees to rebuild their lives and establish sustainable businesses. “We are not just bringing them home—we are giving them the tools to stand on their own again,” the Governor added.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of all Edo citizens, both at home and in the diaspora. “We remain committed to standing by every Edo citizen in times of need. Together, we will restore hope, create opportunities, and ensure that no Edo son or daughter is left behind,” he stated.
The Governor’s intervention comes amidst growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and the need for states to take proactive steps in reintegrating affected citizens.
The initiative is part of the broader #SHINEAgenda and #PracticalGovernance vision of the Okpebholo administration, which prioritizes citizen welfare, economic empowerment, and inclusive development.
Some of the returnees who spoke during the meeting expressed appreciation for the Governor’s swift response. Many had lost properties and businesses during the attacks and described the support as a lifeline.
The Edo State Government has urged the public to continue showing love and support to the returnees as they reintegrate into society.
