Two days after man attempted stealing car
By James Adamu
In less than 48 hours after a retired policeman was arrested at the National Assembly while attempting to steal a car, four men have been nabbed for stealing armoured cables at the legislative building.
The latest incident, which occurred on Friday, was at the Annex, an extended portion of the expansive National Assembly complex in Abuja.
Investigations by Spear News revealed that the arrest, which was carried out by the personnel of the
the Sergeant-at-arm, had again raised questions about increasing security breaches at the complex.
Following the arrest, the suspects were immediately handed over to the police Special Protection Unit (SPU) at the National Assembly for further investigation.
National Assembly personnel, who were witnesses to the incident, told the outfit that the suspects had, two weeks ago, vandalised the cables and removed key connection points.
On Friday, they reportedly returned to the site again in the morning to remove more parts when they were apprehended.
“This problem of stealing valuables is becoming worrying.
“Cars parked at the complex are now at the risk of being stolen.
“To say that this is happening barely 48 hours after a suspect, who claimed to be a retired policeman, was arrested while attempting to forcibly enter a Toyota car parked at the arcade is most disturbing.
“The situation calls for urgent security reviews at the complex”, one senior official informed Spear News.
Findings also showed that of late, some dubious members of staff or visitors to the legislative building had reportedly formed the habit of pilfering or wilfully carting away office items like computers, chairs and other store supplies.
“We have tried to check this recent trend by searching vehicles leaving the complex, especially through the annex gate at the close of work.
“Some people stay back late into the night, it may be due to work or some other factors they use as cover to commit these infractions.
“However, these checks seem not to be enough and it has made the need to intensify security surveillance, urgent”, another official said.
The police are already on top of the matter.
