The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged residents in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states to evacuate zones susceptible to flooding.
This urgent warning was issued by NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, citing alerts concerning increasing water volumes from the River Niger’s upstream flow in the Republic of Benin.
Umar confirmed the agency has engaged its established procedures for flood readiness and reaction. She has also commanded NEMA’s offices in the region to amplify their public outreach and mobilization initiatives within vulnerable communities.
The agency’s announcement specified that โresidents in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states, which share borders with Benin Republic, are particularly at risk and are advised to take necessary precautions.โ Furthermore, โNEMA offices have been instructed to sensitise communities to remain vigilant and advise residents in high-risk flood plains to evacuate to safer, higher grounds.โ
A plea was also made to the governments of the implicated states to aid their local emergency management bodies. Umar stressed the necessity to execute prearranged plans to reduce the effects of any possible flooding.
โItโs critical that we coordinate our efforts and respond swiftly to protect lives and livelihoods,โ she stated, adding that โthe agency is working to mitigate the potential impact of this yearโs flooding and protect communities at risk.โ
She reaffirmed NEMA’s dedication to a thorough national strategy for flood response, especially considering escalating climate-related dangers.
