The federal government on Tuesday pledged to provide 15,000 homes for 60,000 families within three months.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Muttaqha Darma, made this known at the Renewed Hope housing summit in Abuja.
The summit, themed “From Policy to Projects Financing and Delivering Housing at Scale through PPP”, was organised by Shelter Advisory Services Limited
“In the next three months, I assure Nigerians that 15,000 houses or more will be available for occupation by Nigerian families.
“That means over 60,000 unhoused members of families, unhoused individuals, taking an average of four people per family – father, mother, and two children – will be housed in the next three months.
“By next week, we will begin to assess the availability of these 15,000 houses.
“I will move from place to place and make sure that these 15,000 houses are there and not just on paper. We will be practical as much as we can,” he said.
The minister said that housing delivery was part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to address the country’s housing deficit.
The minister stressed that his administration would move from mere promises to a more practical, results-driven approach.
He said that, although he is relatively new in the ministry, he is currently reviewing briefings from departments and agencies to plan a comprehensive strategy for the sector.
On his part, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Dingyadi, highlighted the importance of affordable and sustainable housing to national development.
Mr Dingyadi commended the organisers of the summit for creating a platform for dialogue among policymakers, investors, development partners, financial institutions and labour stakeholders.
“Housing remains not only a social necessity, but also a powerful driver of economic growth, employment generation, social stability, and national productivity,” he said.
He added that the housing and construction sector creates opportunities across multiple value chains, including manufacturing of building materials, logistics, artisanship, and professional services.
The convener, Dr Olayemi Rotimi-Shodimu, said the summit’s central objective was to bridge the gap between well-articulated policies and tangible, bankable housing projects on the ground.
“We recognise public-private partnerships as the most viable pathway to mobilise long-term finance, align public land and infrastructure with private sector expertise, and deliver housing at the scale Nigeria urgently requires.
“Convened by Shelter Advisory Services Limited, this summit is deliberately practical and transaction-focused. This is not another talk shop.
“Over the next two days, policymakers, state governments, developers, financiers, DFls, and institutional investors will engage on one thing: how to structure, finance, and implement viable housing PPPs,” he said
Mr Rotimi-Shodimu said the emphasis would be on project pipelines, financing instruments, risk-allocation frameworks, and successful delivery models that can be replicated across our states.
A major highlight of the event was the launch of the Renewed Hope housing magazine, which focuses on housing-sector reforms and development initiatives in Nigeria.
