Federal Government has ordered an immediate suspension of all enforcement actions related to the controversial ban on sachet alcoholic beverages and 200ml PET bottles.
The directive puts the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control’s (NAFDAC) planned crackdown on hold indefinitely.
The order originated from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), which serves as the central coordinating body for government policy.
The suspension follows direct intervention by the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control.
According to a statement released on Monday by Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, the OSGF acted upon receiving formal correspondence from the parliamentary committee. The committee’s letter, dated November 13, 2025, and signed by its Deputy Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, cited existing National Assembly resolutions on the issue and urged the government to exercise caution.
“The issues raised in the correspondence are currently under review in line with the statutory role of the OSGF as Chairman of the Cabinet Secretariat and the coordinating authority for government policy implementation,” the statement read.
Consequently, the OSGF declared: “Accordingly, all actions, decisions, or enforcement measures relating to the proposed sachet alcohol ban are to be suspended pending the conclusion of consultations and the issuance of a final directive.”
The statement included a strong clarification for the public and distributors, noting that any enforcement step taken by NAFDAC or any other agency without express clearance from the OSGF “would be deemed invalid and should be disregarded” until an official final decision is communicated.
