The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially announced the resumption of full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, effective January 2, 2026.
The decision, communicated in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Monday, follows a strategic review of emerging security threats.
The police clarified that the earlier suspension of enforcement was a voluntary measure to allow motorists ample time to regularise their documentation, emphasizing that “at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law.”
However, the Force cited a “disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass” as the primary reason for the policy’s return.
According to the statement, criminal elements have exploited the enforcement gap to conceal identities while committing offences such as armed robbery and kidnapping.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has assured the public that the renewed enforcement will be conducted “with utmost professionalism, respect for the rights of citizens, and in accordance with extant laws.”
Motorists who require the permit are strongly advised to apply through approved channels before the January 2, 2026, deadline to avoid penalties.
The enforcement resumption comes despite the matter still being before a court, with the police stating it is a “proactive measure to safeguard our communities” pending the final judicial determination.
