The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election, with its candidate, Mohammed Kasim, securing a decisive win over his rivals.
According to real-time data monitored by Spear News Nigeria on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Results Viewing Portal (IREV), over 93 percent of results from the various polling units in the area council were successfully uploaded, reflecting the transparency of the electoral process.
Declared the winner by the INEC Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, Mr. Kasim polled a total of 22,165 votes to defeat his closest contender, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 17,788 votes.
The high rate of result uploads to IREV was commended by civil society organizations monitoring the election, as it reduced the risk of result manipulation and allowed the public to track the collation process in real time.
A breakdown of the chairmanship results in Gwagwalada shows the African Democratic Congress (ADC) securing 1,366 votes, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) polled 1,687 votes. Other smaller parties recorded minimal figures, with the total valid votes standing at 43,960.
The area council has 207,577 registered voters, but only 46,294 were accredited to vote in Saturday’s election, which held across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
During his campaign, Mr. Kasim promised to prioritize community welfare, womenโs empowerment, and improved healthcare and education for children.
His victory offers a glimmer of hope for the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and high-profile defections to the ruling APC in recent months.
The election in Gwagwalada was largely peaceful, with INEC officials confirming a smooth process across the polling units.
