In a stunning declaration, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has pronounced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “dead and beyond redemption,” while revealing that three more governors are set to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Wednesday, Fayose delivered a brutal assessment of his own party’s condition, stating, “The PDP is sick and remains perpetually sick without a cure in view.” He dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu was responsible for the party’s collapse, placing the blame squarely on internal leadership.
“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems,” Fayose insisted. “Those who killed the party know themselves.”
The former governor, who maintains his PDP membership, revealed significant impending defections that would further deplete the opposition’s ranks. “Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon. There will be five remaining,” he disclosed, adding a scathing assessment of the party’s electoral value: “The five remaining, one of them will struggle to catch the ticket, and they all know that the ticket is an ordinary tissue paper.”
Fayose dismissed allegations that the presidency orchestrated the recent defections of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the APC, asserting that the governors acted based on their own political calculations.
The outspoken politician attributed the party’s decline to internal power struggles and ego clashes among current leaders, accusing them of destroying the unity that once made the PDP a dominant force. “They are largely killing the party because they want to control it. This is what happened in 2023,” he added.
Despite being a founding member of the PDP, Fayose stated he would not participate in any efforts to revive the party, suggesting the rot predates the current crises. His remarks signal deepening troubles for the main opposition party as it faces further erosion of its state-level foothold ahead of future elections.
