Dr. Chris Ngige, former Governor of Anambra State and immediate-past Minister of Labour and Employment, was yesterday taken into custody by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Spear News gathered that Ngige was arrested Wednesday evening at his private residence in the Asokoro district of Abuja.
EFCC officials reportedly arrived at the property with a warrant and escorted Ngige to their headquarters for questioning.
The arrest puts to rest hours of speculation and alarming social media rumours that had suggested the former minister was missing or had been kidnapped. His former media aide, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the development in a brief statement.
“Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later,” Chukwuelobe said.
Ngige, who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has recently been in the public eye following a dangerous incident in Anambra State where his convoy was attacked by armed men. Although he was not physically harmed.
As of press time, the anti-graft agency has not issued an official statement regarding the reasons for his arrest or the nature of their investigation.
Spear News reports that in 2024, was reportedly detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) amid an explosive investigation into the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Ngige was said to have presented himself for questioning following allegations of misappropriating a staggering N48 billion during his tenure as minister.
