The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued an advice to former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, SAN, urging him to concentrate on meeting his bail conditions rather than engaging in media narratives, as he spends a fourth night in its custody over corruption allegations.
The anti-graft agencyโs position comes in response to claims that Malamiโs bail was revoked for political reasons. In a detailed statement, the EFCC clarified that Malamiโs continued detention is a direct result of his failure to fulfill the five specific conditions attached to the provisional administrative bail granted to him on November 28, 2025, following his initial interrogation.
According to the Commission, the former Minister has neither met any of the requirements nor shown a clear readiness to comply.
His situation intensified after he failed to report for further questioning as scheduled on December 1. While his reporting was deferred to December 4 following a written plea on grounds of โill-healthโโa request the EFCC grantedโthe agency notes he provided no supporting medical documentation.
Upon reporting on December 4, Malami was still unable to satisfy the pending bail terms. He was subsequently invited again on December 8 and has been held since to secure his compliance. The EFCC firmly denied any political motive, stating, โIt is equally ridiculous to insinuate that the Commission barred him from participating in political activities.โ
โThe EFCC has no interest in the political affiliation of its suspects. It bears reiterating that the Commission is apolitical,โ the statement emphasised, pointing to recent actions against other high-profile figures as proof of its neutrality.
The Commission concluded by advising Malami to cooperate with investigators and direct his efforts toward fulfilling the signed bail agreement, warning against dissipating energy on what it termed โfalse claims in the media.โ
