The Edo State Government has issued a statement addressing the disruption caused by a protest in Ekpoma on Saturday, January 10, urging residents to pursue security concerns through coordinated channels rather than road blockades.
In a press statement released by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, the government acknowledged the constitutional right to protest but emphasised that actions which disrupt public order can complicate ongoing security efforts.
“While we recognise the right of citizens to express concerns, matters of security require calm, coordination, and constructive engagement. Blocking roads does not aid security operations and may inadvertently expose communities to further risks”, the statement read.
The statement clarified that Governor Monday Okpebholo remains responsive to genuine safety concerns but stressed that effective security relies on intelligence sharing and community collaboration with security agencies, not unstructured actions that undermine public order.
Residents were reminded of the governor’s security framework, which includes strengthening the Edo Security Corps, neighbourhood watch initiatives, and regular engagement with community leaders and traditional institutions. The government highlighted these as the appropriate platforms for raising concerns and contributing to safety.
“Uncoordinated protests can distract security agencies and slow down responses,” the Commissioner noted. “We urge everyone to remain law-abiding, calm, and supportive of the security operatives working to protect lives and property.”
The statement concluded with a reassurance that security strategies are under continuous review and strengthening, reaffirming the state’s commitment to making Edo safer for all.
