In a significant policy announcement aimed at enhancing educational standards, the Edo State Government has introduced a series of reforms set to commence in the 2025/2026 academic session. The new measures are designed to promote stability, consistency, and quality learning throughout the state’s school system.
A textbook reuse policy has been established, permitting younger siblings to use approved textbooks previously bought for their older siblings. These approved textbooks will remain in circulation for a minimum of four years before being subject to review by the Ministry of Education.
The government has also issued strict guidelines regarding graduation ceremonies. Such events will now be reserved solely for pupils completing Basic Education, covering Primary 1 to JSS 3, and for students finishing Senior Secondary 3. Only modest celebrations will be permitted at these levels. The new rules explicitly prohibit prom parties and forbid any form of graduation ceremony or party for pre-basic pupils, including those in nursery, kindergarten, or primary six.
A further key reform involves mandatory entrepreneurship skills training for all Junior Secondary School 3 students. Aligning with ongoing curricular reforms that incorporate new trade subjects, this initiative requires JSS 3 students to complete the training before graduation. From the next academic year, every JSS 3 leaver will receive two certificates: the standard Basic Education Certificate Examination certificate and a new Skills Acquisition Certificate in their chosen trade subject.
The Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to developing students who are not only academically proficient but also equipped with practical entrepreneurial skills for the modern world.
