The Economic Community of West African States has appointed former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) to lead its Election Observation Mission to Côte d’Ivoire, tasking him with overseeing the crucial presidential election scheduled for October 25, 2025.
According to a statement from the regional body, the mission will be deployed from October 19 to 29, 2025, in line with the provisions of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
In this high-profile diplomatic role, the former Vice President will be at the helm of a delegation comprising eminent figures from across West Africa. The statement outlined the mission’s core objectives, noting that “as Head of Mission, Osinbajo will lead a delegation of eminent West Africans who will engage with key national stakeholders to encourage a peaceful and credible electoral process.”
The mission will also work in coordination with other observer groups to provide a comprehensive assessment of the polls. “The team will also collaborate with international and domestic observer groups to assess the conduct of the polls,” the ECOWAS statement confirmed.
The deployment underscores the regional bloc’s ongoing commitment to maintaining stability and democratic standards within its member states. ECOWAS stated that the move “underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to promoting peace, stability, and credible elections across West Africa.”
