The Delta State Police Command, in its fight against crime, has since January recovered a significant cache of illegal firearms, including 11 AK-47 rifles, while arresting over 106 suspects involved in various heinous crimes.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, disclosed this during the Command’s first-quarter press briefing for 2025, held in Asaba, the state capital.
According to him, the Command’s sustained intelligence-driven operations across the state led to the arrest of 35 armed robbery suspects, 24 suspected kidnappers, 21 murder suspects, 22 cultists, and 4 persons linked to rape and defilement cases.
“A total of 53 firearms were recovered, among them 11 AK-47 rifles, 1 G-3 rifle, 9 Beretta pistols, 19 single-barrel and cut-to-size guns, and 13 pump-action guns,” CP Abaniwonda stated. He added that the Command also recovered assorted ammunition, further crippling the firepower of criminal gangs operating in the state.
The police boss also revealed that 13 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued and reunited with their families, while 14 suspected stolen vehicles were retrieved during the period under review.
“One of the major highlights of our operations was the neutralization of a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating in and around Ogwashi-Uku, Ibusa, Issele-Uku, Ubulu-Uku, and nearby communities,” the Commissioner said. “The group, responsible for several high-profile abductions, was dismantled in a fierce gun duel with our operatives.”
CP Abaniwonda credited the success of the operations to the synergy between the police, the Delta State Government, led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, other security agencies, and vigilant community members.
He urged residents to continue supporting the police by volunteering information, stressing that community engagement is vital to maintaining security. “Security is everyone’s business. If you see something, say something,” he said.
