The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the opening of a formal investigation into “unacceptable behaviour” exhibited by players and officials during two highly-charged quarter-final matches at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.
The probe specifically focuses on incidents that occurred during the fixtures between Cameroon and Morocco, and Algeria and Nigeria. CAF stated it has collected official match reports and video evidence indicating potentially serious breaches of conduct.
In a statement issued on Monday, the continental governing body condemned any behaviour that targets match officials or event organizers, emphasizing that such actions are inconsistent with the professional standards expected at its events.
“The matters have been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation,” the organization confirmed. “Appropriate action will be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing.”
Furthermore, CAF revealed its investigation extends beyond the pitch. Officials are also reviewing footage of an alleged incident involving members of the media who reportedly misbehaved in the designated mixed zone area, where players and press interact post-match.
This disciplinary move casts a shadow over the conclusion of a tournament that has otherwise been celebrated for its high-quality football. The semi-finals are set to proceed, but CAFโs swift action underscores a firm stance against misconduct that threatens the integrity and image of African footballโs premier competition.
“The Confederation strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches,” the statement read. “Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
All parties involved now await the findings of the Disciplinary Board, which could lead to sanctions ranging from fines to suspensions.
