The funeral prayer (Janaiza) for Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, will hold tomorrow in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, according to a statement by his longtime aide, Bashir Ahmad.
The burial rites are scheduled to take place at 2:00 PM local time, in accordance with Islamic traditions.
“The Janaiza of the late President Muhammadu Buhari will take place in his hometown, Daura, tomorrow at 2:00 PM,” Ahmad announced via social media. “May Allah (SWT) have mercy on him.”
The late president, who passed away on Sunday at the age 82 at a, London Hospital, will be laid to rest in his family compound in Daura. Expected at the ceremony are dignitaries from across Nigeria and international representatives paying their last respects to the former head of state.
Security has been tightened in Daura as the ancient town prepares to receive an influx of mourners. The Katsina State government has declared a three-day mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast across all government buildings.
President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s leader from 2015 to 2023, was known for his austere lifestyle and deep connection to his Daura roots. His choice to be buried in his hometown rather than the capital Abuja reflects his lifelong preference for simplicity.
The funeral will be preceded by the traditional Islamic washing of the body (Ghusl) and shrouding (Kafan) at the family residence. Only close family members and Islamic clerics will participate in these private rites before the public Janaiza prayer at 2 PM.
